Case Study No. 403
An industrial washer in a truck engine plant has a pump and an orientation gear. The customer was using "gas generator" type lubricators to service the 3 pump bearings and orientation gear. Pump bearings were failing because the lubricant was getting clogged in the lines. The lubricators servicing the orientation gear were neglected because they were located inside the gear's protective cage, making them difficult to access. Months of no lubrication led to premature tooth wear.
All single-use lubricators were replaced with two 3-point lubrication systems. For the orientation gear, the lubrication system was remote-mounted outside the cage, for easy access. This not only made visual inspection of the lubs level easier, but also allowed for quick servicing of the lube system without the need for shutting down the washer.
